The objective of this study is to use high-speed video recording to study, quantitatively, the three-dimensional evolution of the spray structure during gas puff plasmas with the use of 1-2 different gases. The capabilities of 1MA, 100-200ns rise-time COBRA pulsed power generator are demonstrated. In this experiment, when the gas flow was introduced at the rear of the power supply, a hollow cone like spray was observed. With the gas jet blocking the rear of the power supply, the resulting spray became spherical. These results suggest that, for this pulsed power experiment, the rear of the power supply needs to be opened, allowing the introduction of the gas from the side to help produce hollow cones, while the introduction of the gas from the rear prevents the formation of hollow cones. If the gas is blocked from both the front and rear, then a cylindrical cone-like spray appears. The experimental setup was modified to incorporate a high-speed video, and the typical dynamics of the gas puff plasmas were recorded with a 20MHz frame rate. The typical time of the gas puff events was about 20 ns, and the average operating voltage was 35 kV. The high-speed video captured the evolution of the spray shape from liquid-like to solid-like, and transformed from a hollow cone to a solid cone. During this process, the typical Weber number of the spray and the k value of the flow rate of each gas were recorded. The k value is defined as the ratio between flow rate and characteristic length scale, and it is a measure of the fluid velocity, u. The Weber number is the ratio of the inertial force over the viscous force in the fluid. The k and weber values obtained for different gases are very different from each other. The results of this study will help optimize the gas puff nozzle design and pulsed power generator performance in the future.

The physics of magnetically coupled circuits is discussed first, as a background for the discussion of engineering issues related to high-frequency power transformer design. Attention is paid to physical processes that influence such factors as size, efficiency, and reliability of a high voltage power transformer. The basic electrical circuit of a high frequency generator is analyzed next, with focus on functional principles. This section investigates the role and function of basic components, such as power supply, inverter, and voltage doubler. Essential electronic circuits of generator control are then examined, including regulation of voltage, current and timing of electrical power delivery to the x-ray tube.
