The rather straightforward original theatrical cut of the new Karate Kid installment is available on disc with a solid Dolby Atmos soundtrack and looks pretty damn good for being a few years old. Unfortunately, the entire disc is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen, but the 4K video is upscaled from the previous Blu-ray release, so this one of the disc is virtually indistinguishable from the slightly dirtier 1080p copy released six years earlier. There are decent hi-rez transfers throughout, but not much else to recommend here-bar possibly one of the better extras in the collection (but its only included on the Amazon download).
Re-constructing this classic film is a labor of love, and the LAIKA team did a great job of giving the visuals that certain sheen and new life in ways they haven’t had in a long time. And while I still agree with the description of the picture as a 10, I give ‘The Karate Kid’ a 5 for its audio upgrade – just about perfect.
The 10th anniversary of the theatrical film, The Karate Kid (1984), was released on June 11, 2014 to commemorate the film’s 10-year Anniversary. The Anniversary Edition comes with two bonus features; the 12-page anniversary comic book featuring never-before-seen black and white sketches & storyboard art by the movie’s editor, Dean Wise; and the film’s theatrical trailer. For the first time, the film is presented in the “Scream Factory” 2D and 3D uncompressed theaters. A new featurette titled \”The Journey’s End\” explores the making of the film’s upcoming 10th anniversary Blu-ray and DVD. The film’s cast and crew share the back stories of the characters they portrayed in the film and the challenges they faced during its production. \”The Journey’s End\” and the 10-year anniversary comic book can be accessed via an interactive menu in the \”Theatrical Cut\” version of the film.
