while the 500mm f/4 is fine for images of less than 500mm, it really doesnt work for anything taller than that. even in the best case, the sensor is never going to be able to capture all of the peripheral light. unfortunately, the 450mm f/2.8 is a bit smaller and lighter than the 500mm f/4, so you can imagine the light falloff problem is worse than with the 500mm. moreover, the 450mm is a lot less expensive than the 500mm, so you can almost certainly get a better deal. while the 500mm has been discontinued, you can still buy it from nikon, but its price has shot up considerably from $13,000 to $29,000. it probably will not fit in your 14.5″ backpack, so you’ll have to find a place to store it. if your pocketbook can stretch that far, you can even find some used ones, but its just a straight up gamble. i recommend the 450mm instead.
