Jackson describes the cultural legacy of the Raj as two related ‘narratives’ – a ‘violent narrative’ which focuses on the campaigns of violence carried out by the British in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This ‘violent narrative’ is considered authentic and important by the nationalists (including the leftist historians of the early 20th century), and is the one to which Jackson adheres in his history. The other, related narrative is the ‘civilising narrative’ which provides the legitimation for the continuation of British colonial rule – the narrative of British values and the British way of life. The story of India, Jackson maintains, is a story of British violence, but also a story of British generosity, philanthropy and morality. Jackson’s book deals with many of the issues in his second narrative. His treatment of the Partition of India is only one example. Another example is his treatment of the partition of Bengal. He criticises the British for ‘acquiring’ land in Bengal by ‘occupation’, which implicitly is a story of British violence. But how did this happen? By ‘acquisition’? By a ‘forced loan’? The point is not really important; what does seem important is that Jackson’s narration has a different emphasis. As he puts it, “The loss of Bengal did not entail in my view a loss for the British Empire.” Jackson seems to accept the violent narrative as legitimate. When we take a closer look at the story of Bengal, however, the emphasis on British violence is not found.

The history of the partition of Bengal is only dealt with briefly in the book. Jackson spends the most time explaining the British annexation of the state of Bengal in 1905. Jackson argues that the annexation of Bengal was a mistake, and the British should have annexed the lower half of Bengal (now West Bengal) in 1826. It is interesting to note that Jackson does not discuss the partitioning of Bengal. This omission is most significant when one considers that Bengal was split into East and West Bengal as a result of the partition. Jackson must have done research on the partition of Bengal and yet he says nothing about it. Jackson’s depiction of India is that of a troubled country. Yet, he points out that Indians themselves were not unhappy with the Indian National Congress. Nor were the Indians unhappy about British rule; they simply wanted independence.

In the initial panel discussion, the emphasis had been on the word negotiation, and it was hoped that papers would look at this process, as dictated not by external pressures only, but trace a long history of women’s engagement with Islam in the situations that they were examining. This engagement had involved protest at the obvious misogynist aspects that Islam is (in)famous for, but would also draw on the ways that women are ambiguously situated at the crossroads between modernity, tradition and nationalism. The papers presented looked at the way in which institutional structures such as the law empower (or not) women’s lives, as well as the ways in which religion is practiced and manifested in everyday life. The emphasis was on women’s active engagement with a new or traditional religious discourse, and ways in which new forms of feminine and feminist subjectivities may emerge from within these engagements. Conversely, officials in certain Muslim-minority countries seek to block sharia from influencing state law or practice. Some have prohibited behaviors encouraged under sharia, such as veil wearing for women or ritual slaughter to make meat halal. The ban on wearing veils or headscarves exists in France, for example, where secularism is part of the national identity and conspicuous religious symbols are banned in certain public spaces. Supporters of such laws say they promote womens empowerment and social harmony, while critics say they ignore individual freedoms and unfairly target Muslims. The Vedic Period (c. 1500 – c. 500 BCE) is the era in which the Vedas were committed to writing, but this has nothing to do with the age of the concepts or the oral traditions themselves. The designation Vedic Period is a modern construct, which relies on evidence of an Indo-Aryan migration, which, as noted, is not universally accepted.
