we’ve been considering this a long time. when we first started looking at destiny we wondered if its big, open world, fantastical setting and focus on narrative could provide for a great, fun, action shooter. we loved the guardians concept, and were really excited to see a franchise built on that specific idea take off. but we didn’t want to make destiny 2.

we never thought destiny would be as successful, popular, or fun as it is. but a complete game takes a lot of time, design iteration, and effort. we started destiny with very specific goals in mind. we knew that we wanted to make a massively multiplayer game, and we also knew that we wanted destiny to be a first-person shooter. those goals were a huge part of the design process for destiny, but we started exploring other design possibilities at an early stage. as we began to explore the idea of cooperative pvp, we began thinking about how you could use the social interaction and narrative that we were creating to create a great first-person shooter.

we want to hear your feedback. we want to see how destiny matches up against other great shooters out there. we want to make destiny a great game for all kinds of playstyles. over the next several months, we’ll add more content and more features to destiny, and we want you to be a part of the journey.

i’m honestly not sure if call of duty: mw3 is a good game. the setting is beautiful and the multiplayer really suits the halo-inspired kind of fps gameplay, and some of the levels look fantastic. there’s no denying that the game is a completely successful one, though. it brings all the best elements of the series and improves on them in some notable ways. from using the environment to maximum effect to the fantastic combat, mw3 does exactly what you’d hope it does. ground zeroes was kind of a failure by now-developer sledgehammer games’ normal standards. in 2015, the studio had put its co-founder on hiatus to work on crash bandicoot n. sane trilogy, and that left the original infinity ward team’s hands full with making modern warfare. nevertheless, infinity ward went all-out with ground zeroes, creating a two-part story set during the course of a single night in new york city and san francisco. these scenes and missions felt quite necessary and revealed a genuine emotional depth to the narrative and setting that, in fact, was a bit lacking in the rest of the game. sledgehammer went a bit further than the rest of infinity ward, however; the players fought in real-time and, for the first time in a cod game, the weapons could be equipped while on the move. the creative director would later admit the game’s quick time events were an afterthought, and that was probably the best thing about the game. just like with borderlands, the focus was on content over mechanics, and this game’s setting offered a perfect chance to get away from the shooter-meets-adventure-game tropes that had plagued developers and games before. the gameplay was solid, and various downloadable content would expand on the formula further in later years. 5ec8ef588b
