the band creates its own melodies, as seen in the drums from andy bown whose drumming is amazing throughout the entire album, plus andy’s grooving guitar, gilmour’s fleet and supple piano playing, and the lyrical complexities carried by waters with his sometimes melancholy words. the song itself contains a repeated melody punctuated by a slow rhythmic progression in the background, leading to an eerie high note that has a tremelo. the song slowly builds to a frantic pace during the middle eight, which the horn section accentuates and gives this song another completely different feel. waters is adding harmonics of his guitar by stopping it down. gilmour and wright are playing in perfect synchronization during the song. they all steal scenes as the masterpiece unfolds. listen for the subtle mystery of gilmour’s piano where he sounds as if he is searching for a divine mystery that he wants to reveal to the listener. wright’s energetic bass lines at just the right moments carry the song forward. waters is holding a heavy tone, but sometimes breaks down into a melodious shout. see the video by following this link:
this is everything a song like that needs to be. i will now watch the latter half of the wall with much more clarity. it is difficult to explain how this album added to my intellectual capacity by more than three decades, but its impact is profound. i am very much looking forward to the new the wall with new approach of the shorter, distilled album. that is my fix. more images can be found by following this link:
despite the abundance of covers, the majority of the material on here is the produced material from the period from 1971-1974. it mostly takes the form of the band playing or recording, with minimal or no overdubs. band members never went anywhere without their instruments. several of the demos contained four-hand sections that are surprisingly rich and complex. at times the material sounds just as polished and professional as the studio material, while some is rough as a toothbrush. tapes from this period aren’t rare, but this collection is probably the best available. for a multi-camera documentary on the band’s recording and studio process, check out vitamin ph , our video series about contemporary photography.
