The use of activated carbon for purification of a liquid containing dissolved organic materials is exemplified in U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,113,882 and 4,136,007. It is also known that active charcoal can be used to remove organic compounds from water, including volatile organic compounds. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 2,933,403 describes the use of active charcoal for removing the volatile organic content from gas-vapor mixtures. U.S. Pat. No. 4,731,254 describes a process for the recovery of volatile organic compounds from air streams using a high surface area carbon adsorbent. U.S. Pat. No. 5,130,059 discloses a process and an adsorbent for purifying water using activated carbon and, optionally, an alkaline earth metal compound which are intimately mixed in a granular medium. It is also known to use micro-encapsulated carbon for the removal of volatile organic compounds from waste gas streams (for example see U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,895,978, 4,849,260 and 5,118,429).
