the first film in the inception series is one of christopher nolan’s more impressive feats as a film maker. nolan is probably best known for being one of the founders of the batman film series, but he has made his mark elsewhere. the dark knight trilogy is a love letter to the great film noir tradition, the two memento films are some of the best crime dramas of the last 20 years, and his 2001 science fiction thriller the prestige was here is one of my favorite film of all time. the other movies in the inception series are probably the most underwhelming. the dark knight rises is a lackluster action film with a ponderous script, and neither of the two sequels is especially good. inception, however, is one of the finest films of the 21st century. nolan and his screenwriter brother jonathan have created a masterpiece about an organization of criminals who steal movies from the subconscious minds of their victims. the set-up is simple, but the structure of the film is brilliantly complex. nolan pulls us into the minds of the main characters and makes us empathize with them. he is a master of both suspense and character development.
the first half of inception is a well-paced, cerebral thriller with cool visuals and a compelling story. the flashback scenes are a great way to introduce us to the characters, and are also key to the overall plot. the action sequences are predictable, but they are also very cool. the big set-pieces are again pretty good, but the film does not really have a lot of character development. when the film does manage to get introspective, the story comes off as heavy-handed. the ending is good, but perhaps a little too on the nose. overall, inception is a stylish, entertaining film, but it is a little too long and lacks a little bit of character development for it to be a classic.
