i agree with devi that this work is global. this is not an india specific issue. but when i was reading the story, douloti the bountiful, it made me think about decolonization and what it meant to the indian tribes. devi, in the original, leaves the reader with the image of douloti beaten from life. in the end, she died of tuberculosis and the doctor decides to dissect her body to study the diseases in the region. the doctor begins to dissect douloti and devi ends her story. in devi, the cause of death is still the message. in fact, doulotis body itself carries the burden of injustice, because devi has shown the reader that doulotis is a slave in a way that is beyond her life.
my opinion is that the tale of douloti is equal parts metaphorical and real. when i read the first lines of devi’s douloti the bountiful, i could not tell what kind of tale it would be. her voice was so eloquent. she spoke of the tribals as the people who lived in the back drop of the indian society. they were the invisible people who were used by the british as an excuse to dominate the land. devi explains that they were only brought into the public eye by the british.
this is the reason that devi would never divorce herself from her culture. in an interview she explained that she saw the tribals as the suffering of democracy and capitalism (2000). therefore, she used the tribals as a symbol for the larger issues that existed in india. the issues are the caste system and the patriarchy. essentially, the system the british implanted in india was “imperiality” and is what she sets out to reveal.
