atomic bomberman is an isometric arcade platformer, the evolution of the older brother dyna blaster, focused on multiplayer gaming. the game has no tangible story, the first violin is played by exaggeration and the intention to let the player get really knocked out. one battle is a matter of a few minutes at most, played at a murderous pace. the little guys are equipped with the ability to place a bomb.
neo bomberman is a game that was developed for the neo-geo arcade hardware. it was only released as a cartridge kit for the arcade-based mvs variant of the neo-geo hardware, as there was no version for the aes or neo-geo cd home console systems. until 2017’s bombergirl, it was the last bomberman game to be released in arcades.
however, in the middle of the game, there’s a time where you can select one of three difficulty levels – new difficulty, extra hard, and hardest, where you may find more players for multiplayer, as well as an extra mode. it’s a pretty short duration, but more players mean more fun! and speaking of more players – if you play for single player, you can join up to ten other players in the same session. unfortunately, you can only select up to five players in a session, which is fine, as playing single player really is so much fun. if you want to play with more than five people, you’re going to have to pay out more money for the mvs, which is pretty pricy for a lone player; but like i said, the game is great as a single player title. it’s still pretty similar in gameplay to the later games, and really when you think about it, it’s pretty much the last bomberman game before the bombergirl series. the new bomberman engine was pretty advanced for the time, and it really helped the game out.
the schemes in bomberman are basically modifiers that can be placed on the level and affect how the level is played, and can be used to do things like block off certain areas, make walls’movable’ and even spawn explosives under the bomberman, or make some walls, floors, etc. pretty cool right? of course, the schemes are nothing special, but it adds a bit of fun to the game. i remember making bombs in some kind of a labyrinth and tossing them to my friends and the like, when it first came out. i also remember making a scheme to spawn a few bombs in the maze for some reason. also the unique concept of bombs not exploding until the timer ends was cool, and the whole thing with being able to throw bombs at the screen itself was a neat thing as well. i remember using the announcer that came with the game to taunt my friends, which also was fun. other schemes are just things like changing colours of walls, adding “holes” to the map, adding a ceiling, adding some kind of a glimmer, etc. all in all, i think it is a fun feature that definitely adds a bit more to the game, and it is something that could have been implemented in other titles, but i think this game got it perfect. on top of that, this game is considered an essential part of the bombman series of games, and its place in the history of the franchise is vital to understand. while the original title was a one-man show (and i don’t think that anyone ever managed to beat the game, although i know that many tried, and that the game was even hard to understand on how to beat it), the support of the community is what made the game a success and it was the second game to include multiplayer, after the explosion of the popularity of the series and the numerous big-scale games that came after. 5ec8ef588b
