A life drawing class can be challenging for the instructor, as it is difficult to satisfy the students’ desire for information and stimulate their critical faculties without engaging in the sexualization of the model. To facilitate a social, non-sexual interaction between the instructor and students, a good life drawing instructor will be sensitive to even apparently innocent gestures made by the model. The model’s gestures to encourage an arm resting upon a table, or a gesture to suggest a place to take a picture, may be misinterpreted. Such gestures alleviate momentary anxiety students may be experiencing, and may encourage them to concentrate on the pose or gesture itself. Knowing a student well, an instructor should be able to adopt an appropriate tone of voice or body language that will assist the student in rejecting feelings of discomfort and longing.
A nude model who is committed to represent an aspect of the human body requires practice in maintaining its integrity. Real models can vary by race, age, wardrobe, and hairstyle, and experience in portraying diverse bodies can lead to a global perspective on the characteristics of the human form. Because of the expense, time, and nature of facial features, life drawing at art schools is usually of the extremities. Some life-drawing instructors use photographs of themselves, then erase their face to allow students to examine the rest of the body. When students see these photographs for the first time, Nedergaard recalls that “they have a tantrum like the ones you get in ‘I’m learning about people as a human being’ classes when they see a picture of someone’s feet.”[18]
“Veneration of a nude model and the pursuit of sexy poses might seem contradictory in theory, but there is a way to make working with a model sensual and productive. Staying in the classroom and away from the model, you can still engage in exactly the process you are trying to convey. Indeed, encouraging your students to try a similar pose will highlight to them your commitment to teaching.
