Again, the Windows Vista control panel (see Figure 1) lets you adjust transparency and window-composite properties. Note the transparency control in the lower right corner. Turning transparency off is not the same as removing the DWM effects. In the latter case, you have no window-composite effects (see Figure 2). Let’s start with turning transparency off. We start by setting to 1 the value that corresponds to the lower right corner, or 75%, in Figure 1. This corner will be used to tell Windows Vista how much of the underlying window should be visible to the end user. It indicates how much of the underlying window should be visible and how much of the desktop area will be obscured when the window is active. This value corresponds to the lower left and top values in Figure 2, which are for what I call the Before effects. The lower left corner sets the amount of the desktop window that will be visible when the window is active. It corresponds to the amount of the client area that will be covered by the drawn composition effect. The top corner settings are for what I call the After effects, which are the areas of the background that will be transparent behind the window’s composition effect. The definitions of Before and After don’t include all possible combinations of transparency settings. Another way to think of it is how much of the window can be obscured by the underlying client area. So a value of 80% is the same as saying that 80% of the window’s client area is obscured by the underlying client area. Note that it’s not 100%, because as mentioned, there’s a window strip underneath that must be black. So the lower left corner setting is the amount of the client area that the window’s composition effect covers, while the upper right corner setting is the amount of the window’s client area that the composition effect overlaps. For example, if the client area is 100%, the After value will be 100% – the composition effect coverage is 100% of the client area. If the client area is 95% (80% +15%), the After value will be 95% – the composition effect coverage will be 95% of the client area. The upper right corner value is also important. If you have, for example, a value of 95%, the upper right corner value will be 95%. In that case, nothing will be drawn in the portion of the client area outside the 95% region. The 70% before and 70% after value is another example. If you have a value of 70%, nothing will be drawn in the client area in the 70% region outside the window’s composition area. In most cases you can’t see the different combinations of Before and After values that are possible unless you’ve checked the transparency values in the control panel. The upper left corner is the amount of the window that’s obscured by the underlying client area. It tells Windows Vista that how much of the window is covered by the desktop should be invisible. This corner is usually set to either 0% or 100% (in my testing, 0% is the default). Note that 100% of the window is usually the default if you don’t adjust the other values.
