    Q: At what frequency is a codec/amp/whatever de-coupled from the audio source? When listening to many different types of music, using headphones, what audio “frequency” is the most active part of an audio signal? Is it the bass, the midrange? Does this relate to the envelope of the signal(which you get from a compressor)? Does the accuracy with which a codec processes or drops the frequency of an audio signal make a difference? A: What frequencies are the most active part of an audio signal? The very lowest frequencies are the loudest and leave the least distortion, although this depends on the type of lossless file format used. For example, MP3 compression generally has a greater sound quality than AAC compression. (note that older versions of Windows Media Player had a variable bit rate AAC implementation). Some algorithms (e.g. MP3) can determine the frequency masking curve (the weakest part of the signal) and only encode in it; as they determine the weakest part, the lowest frequencies are the loudest for these types of files.
