The alleged abuse, outlined in court documents, occurred between October 2010 and April 2011, when the victim was a sophomore and a senior in the school’s engineering program, according to the Birmingham News.
Officials at the university said the allegations are a “very, very serious situation.”
The victim told police the alleged abuse began when he was just 18 years old and the professor targeted him in a “relentless pursuit” of sex.
He told police the professor groped him twice, grabbed him by the shoulders and put his hands down his pants, according to court documents.
“I am appalled and appalled by the details revealed in this case,” Interim UAB President Mark Keenum said. “UAB has taken immediate steps to address the allegations and to ensure that any future sexual misconduct that may have occurred is promptly addressed.”
According to the victim, the abuse escalated in the fall of 2010. He said the professor forced him to perform oral sex on him and then at one point, placed his hand down the victim’s pants.
The victim told authorities that he went to UAB’s Counseling and Psychological Services department because he believed he could not do anything else.
A representative of the UAB Counseling and Psychological Services, Michael Hart, said that the victim and a counselor, who was not named in court documents, met with the professor.
Hart said the counselor interviewed the victim and the professor separately and the victim’s story was “compelling.”
“The counselor determined that there was a real risk that the student would reoffend,” he said.
The professor was immediately placed on administrative leave.
The university released a statement on Thursday, saying it does not comment on matters that are pending legal process.Electoral district of South Fremantle
