Regeria Hope is a full-length episode of the ‘reformed’ Ace Attorney series of adventure games. The episode attempts to maintain the unique atmosphere, mood and gameplay of the Ace Attorney series, while adding a few new concepts that fit more comfortably into the formula. Episode 1 introduces to us what appears to be an alternate universe, much like the series’ own spin-off series, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. From the outset we can assume that the world of Regeria Hope is much different from our own, and the problems the main character, Carla Lestrade, will face, as well as the stakes of these crimes, are different in nature to our own adventures in the series. We are treated to a world where the swirly, swirling smoke is called ‘spirit’, as is the swirling energy we feel in our hands and more. We also meet a new character, Castor J. Hodges, who appears to be a kind man, but who we learn turns out to be a very bad person. A particular mood is established very early on when we encounter not only the extremely menacing courtroom that we have grown accustomed to, but also a ‘Courage Attribute’, which we later come to understand is a kind of Spirituality that is in the form of a 5-note theme. We also learn of the Flawless Puzzle, which is at the core of the Ace Attorney series, and was introduced to us in the original game, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, but in Regeria Hope we find it used as a basic system for many, many different scenes. For example, we have ‘sight’ puzzles and a series of ‘idea’ puzzles, and we also come across a number of puzzles that are ‘follow the trail of the spirit’ and are the same as those found in the Ace Attorney games. The level of immersion created by this, and the way in which you come to understand the world and the culture and people of Regeria Hope is remarkable, but at the same time there are some aspects that do seem a little out of place. Most notably, the sound effects and music of Regeria Hope seem a little unusual, and were even the subject of criticism in some gaming publications.
