The popular MMO genre has gotten a bit stagnant recently, with the rise of singleplayer games such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, the Fallout series, and really from the ground up, Star Wars: The Old Republic. That being said, the multitude of MMO sequels have pretty much fallen into a downward spiral, what with things like Star Wars Galaxies: A New Hope, which should be the last of the original 6 MMOs to end its life (this is true, although SWG has since gone Virtual).
Recently, however, there has been the appearance of a game called Gangster Empire: Vendetta Online, where your character is a day-to-day type of assassin fighting for money and gang justice. If you’re familiar with movies such as Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, it will feel very much like that. I will go into more detail and gameplay pertaining to the intriguing storyline that comes with this game in a later post. For now, let’s have a look at the gameplay!
1. Controls
Moving around the world is easy thanks to the controller layout you see above. The left bumper, however, does double duty. Right bumper, you’re able to use the invisibility cloak that allows you to duck out of a scuffle or sneak-attack a foe. Left bumper, you can lure out a guard by using false information, and then use the right bumper to “accidentally” knock them out. Surreptitiously swiping your controller’s A and D pad while entering a room will also create privacy against the guard unless they’re looking directly at you.
Sprinting in the game is also easy. Left trigger, dual mouse cursors moves forward, and hold for victory, while simultaneously releasing moves your character a medium distance. The right trigger is similar in function, but moves the mouse cursors back. Depending on what attacks you access, you may need to release the trigger once to land the attack, and then quickly press it again so you’re not moving forward.
Like previous games, your character has a powerful long range punch and headbutt, and other melee weapons such as baseball bats, tire irons, and knives. You can attack from a medium range (by hitting your opponent with a melee weapon), or near a crowd of guards for a standard melee attack from something like a baseball bat.
