after years of being stranded at the end of the line, the show i’ve seen is finally performing at the goodman theater, in central phoenix. a larger stage, more lighting, and updated production design make this the best-looking goodman production i’ve ever seen. the sets and costumes are more restrained than usual but the revelatory choreography by twyla tharp herself elevates the artfulness of her choreography to a higher plane. the house has become a modern marvel with its high tech curtains and kinetic sound. the performers, including their minimalist set, are pumped with an electric energy only those closest to the action can sense.
and so who could resist those smiling, inviting faces, the calling of ‘hey there’? who could deny the offer of a ride on the fire truck, or to be invited up to the balloon balloon what, where they hang out? but at least one of us who’d never expected to be inside the big top came away with more than he bargained for.

Yes, its a sad (or happy) fact that there will never be clowns to send in to Parliament, but one can look back on famous cases where there were: Oscar Wilde, some of the London intelligentsia before the Russian Revolution, and the various suffragettes. Pash lives this life to the full. But I think its possible that the movement, such as it is, has ‘clowned’ up in a particularly nasty way, by dissolving into irrelevancy. As an experiment, I’d like to try a revival. I’d like to return us to the good old times of amateurism and silliness and comedy as a serious tool for the liberation of our democracy. Perhaps, in a small way, this article will push that ball along a little. “ As the Clown Conservatory’s founder described it, “To be a clown is to be a visitor at a circus, but a circus without a clown. Clowns are sacred. They are the first – and some say only – truly honest family. No one is more thrilled by a child’s success than a clown. No one is as delighted by a child’s suffering.” So if you are a performer, from a profession that has been derided as theatrical and self-indulgent, don’t give up yet. You can still ‘bring in the clowns’. We can laugh at the silly strings, the overly staged timing. Heck, maybe we even need to laugh at our past transgressions in order to move on – and perhaps begin again. But lets not forget that they had to get the clowns in at the drop of a hat, and in the great tradition of political protest, there are no clowns on a safety or health and no means of transporting them to the palace without a good deal of preparation. They “gained access to the Palace in the Jubilee Forest” and of course, they needed “real” clothes and badges.
